Vapor Intrusion Assessments & Remediation Services
Vapor intrusion occurs when there is a migration of vapor-forming chemicals from any subsurface source into an overlying building. Recognition of soil vapor intrusion into buildings and other enclosed spaces occurred in the 1980s with concerns over radon intrusion. Subsequently, there was an increasing awareness that anthropogenic chemicals (e.g., petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents) in soil, groundwater, sewers, and drain lines could also pose threats to indoor air quality via the vapor intrusion pathway. PPM has significant experience in assessing and mitigating the risks associated with vapor intrusion. In extreme cases, the vapors may accumulate in dwellings or occupied buildings to levels that may pose near-term safety hazards (e.g., explosion) or acute health effects. Vapor-forming chemicals may include:
Comprehensive Vapor Intrusion Services
PPM’s expert team can complete vapor intrusion assessments and due diligence activities to identify potential or known sources of vapor intrusion. We perform soil, groundwater, soil gas, and indoor air assessments to determine if vapor intrusion standards are met, or if further evaluation, remediation, or mitigation is necessary. We have used the EPA Vapor Intrusion Screening Levels (VISL) model, along with state and federal criteria, to develop cost-effective solutions to address vapor intrusion concerns. PPM has success in mitigating vapor intrusion on a variety of projects through the installation of Vapor Barriers, which is typical for new construction, implementing pre-emptive mitigation (PEM) measures, or designing Sub-Slab Depressurization Systems, which are common mitigation systems for existing construction. Our vapor intrusion assessment services include:
